Our brief for Smalls Bar in South Melbourne, was to create an intimate wine bar that reflected its laneway location and the boutique wine producers it serves.
The design approach utilised soft, muted colour, materiality and artisanal craftsmanship. White and black painted brick, warm stone and timbre set the backdrop for the space. Local Melbourne makers were used to create bespoke items such as the handmade ceramic tiles for the bar and the stitched leather hides for the wall paneling. The banquets are made of aged black leather and charcoal velvet upholstery, dark stone surrounds and Carrara marble table tops. Unexpected brass details complete the overall design experience.
Smalls won the 2015 Eat Drink Design award for “Best Bar Design.”
