Phoebe Quare’s graduate project ‘Beyond the Mainland’ took her to Bere Island off the coast of Southern Ireland where she experimented with discarded mussel shells, first heating them and then grinding them into powder to create a chalky mussel plaster. The plaster can be drilled, glued and sanded to create sculptural objects. Utilising the waste materials from Bere’s fishing industry Phoebe hopes her project will regenerate the island’s dwindling economy.
