Studio Loop Loop is a research design studio in the Netherlands that has developed a process of adding colour to aluminum using pigments made from plants rather than petroleum. Their range includes four bio-based pigments that can be applied to aluminum through anodizing. The process involves using an electric current to oxidize the aluminum, creating a porous surface that is then able to absorb colour before being dipped into a water-based pigment solution. According to the co-founder “natural pigments are being used more and more, but most of them are absolutely ineffective in the context of anodizing” Visser explained. Studio Loop Loop are on a mission to make their process of aluminum anodizing accessible to all.
