Tjeerd Veenhoven’s a Dutch designer has designed Palm Leather Rugs as a sustainable alternative to traditional animal skin hide leather. The designer found that when mixed with glycerin and water the otherwise quite brittle palm leaves turn “nice and soft”. To construct the rugs, strips of palms are laid onto a woven base. Each rug is hand woven and unique.
Moving forward, the designer hopes to sell palm leather as a product on its own. The current automotive market is “extremely demanding” and are increasingly interested in vegan leather alternatives for car internals.
