Kew House

Kew House

An inventive reworking of a grand Queen Anne home in Kew honours form, space and materiality, overlaying the old home and its expansive rear addition with a unique contemporary sensibility.

The striking leadlight hues of the home’s bay windows have driven a rich and saturated colour scheme. Muddy paint tones of marigold and gunmetal grey wrap from skirting to ceiling, simplifying the ornamentation of each room, while subtle tonal shifts in carpets and drapery create a painterly quality, enhancing the sense of mood and seclusion. A reduction in detail and materiality is evident in the bathrooms, where simple solid forms draw focus to the principle materials; marble and mosaic tiling.

A threshold of blackened steel expresses the transition to the rear of the home, accommodating an airy and sun-filled living area. This space is intentionally understated and pure in form and materiality, presenting a carte-blanc space to be enlivened by family life. The kitchen’s weighty island bench is offset by a fine, floating benchtop beyond; a play on scale and mass. An angled smoke mirror splashback reflects the activity of the adjacent dining space, where an intricate aged brass pendant floats over a bespoke heart oak dining table.
