Sea Me

Nienke has spent almost two years exploring the possibilities of seaweed as a material. With funding from the Stimuleringsfonds Creatieve Industrie she has used this research to produce a furniture range from hand woven seaweed yarn. The off-cuts of seaweed are then used to make bio-plastic bowls.

The seaweed fabric on her chair is created using cellulose extracted from kelp. It has a similar properties to viscose – a compound used in synthetic textiles – but with much softer fibers.
