MACA by Avant Mater

MACA is a bio-based material developed and produced by Avant Mater using locally sourced macadamia shells and natural binders. Derived from agricultural byproducts of the Northern Rivers macadamia industry, MACA transforms organic waste into a tactile biocomposite with rich texture, natural depth, and a distinctive earthy character. Through the upcycling of lignocellulosic waste into a stable material system, MACA demonstrates how regional byproducts can become valuable resources for contemporary design applications.

Designed for interior surfaces, decorative objects, and sculptural applications, MACA reflects principles of circular material innovation and waste valorisation. By shifting from non-renewable materials toward organic byproducts, the material explores alternative approaches to production that reduce reliance on extractive resources while extending the lifecycle of agricultural waste streams. Its dense granular surface, formed by visible macadamia shell fragments, gives each piece a unique visual identity and tactile quality. The natural composition and biodegradable characteristics of MACA further reinforce its circularity and low-impact nature.

The project forms part of Avant Mater’s ongoing research into byproduct aggregates and regenerative material systems, exploring how local waste streams can be transformed into materials for applications in design and architecture through low-energy processes and natural binders.
